Giveback Homes Members Help 76-year-old Army Veteran Keep his Berkeley Home

Leonard Powell is a 76-year-old Army Veteran who has owned his Berkeley home for nearly 40 years. Over the years, the home has fallen into significant disrepair, cited by the City of Berkeley for a multitude of code violations. Mr. Powell lives on a pension and supports an extended family, and has been unable to upkeep his home. The repairs are not only needed to meet regulations, but to safely and comfortably house his family.

Mr. Powell supports his daughter and brother, both of whom face debilitating health challenges. Mr. Powell's son, grandson and three granddaughters also share the home with him.

Luckily, Mr. Powell has qualified for the City of Berkeley's Senior and Disabled Home Rehabilitation Loan Program, which provides renovation funds that help elderly homeowners remain in their homes. With this funding, and a personal loan, Mr. Powell will renovate the home he loves and remain in the community where his roots are planted.

Habitat EBSV helped facilitate the renovation for Mr. Powell, while several individuals and companies, including Giveback Homes Members, fundraised and volunteered their time on the build site.

We are thrilled to share that Mr. Powell’s home is now complete and ready for his family to move back in. We cannot thank our Members enough for rallying behind this project and we look forward to helping change more lives in the Bay Area this year.

Thanks to Habitat for Humanity EBSV, and donations from people like our Giveback Homes Members, Leonard Powell is able to stay in the home he has owned for nearly four decades.
