Austin, TX – Concierge Auctions, in partnership with Austin Habitat for Humanity, helped build a home for a single mother in Austin, TX. The Build Day was part of the “House that Tech Built” program, where tech companies donate and volunteer to support the need for affordable homes in Austin. Through the rain and mud, the Concierge Auctions team rolled up their sleeves and swung hammers to help build a two-story, single-family home for Vera, who works hard as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Check out coverage from the day by KVUE here.
Meet the family they helped:
Vera Tolden is a mother and grandmother with a strong drive to succeed and a love for stability and permanence. She loves the friendliness of the people in Austin and says it has always felt safe for her kids, including her 18-year-old daughter, her adult son and her 3-year-old granddaughter.
Vera is a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, working hard to support her family. She and her daughter currently live in an apartment owned by the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA). While she doesn’t mind living there, Vera longs for a place of her own, so she can put down roots and set an example of achievement and leadership for her family. She thought her dream of homeownership was out of reach until she discovered Austin Habitat.
Vera is a graduate of the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program offered by HACA, and recently received her Associate’s degree. While in the FSS program, she learned about Austin Habitat and applied for the program. She’s now doing her sweat equity and loves to learn about how homes are built. Her daughter has worked onsite as well and it has been a great learning experience for them both.
While she works on her home, Vera is planning for the future. Helping her daughter attend and excel in college is the first step once the family is settled in their new home, and she’s also happy for the opportunity to be closer to her ailing mother. She is proud to be setting a good example for her kids, and thrilled that she will finally have a home of her own. She’s thankful for the opportunity to buy her first home and appreciates the supporters who are helping her make that happen.
