First National Build Day A Big Success

IMG_5354One by one, members of Giveback Homes arrived to the build site eager to get their hands dirty and help build a home. This was a very special day for Giveback Homes as it was our first National Build Day! While we continue to build in Nicaragua, it means a lot to be able to build for a family in our own backyard too. Giving both internationally and domestically are extremely important.  It’s not about choosing one over the other, it’s about finding a way to make them both possible for our members, and Thursday marked the beginning of that possibility.

IMG_5266We were all welcomed by the friendly crew members from Habitat for Humanity. They did an amazing job teaching us new skills, guiding us throughout the day, and most importantly, kept us laughing! We’d build with these men and women any day.

Giveback Homes members came far and wide to participate in the build, and it was amazing to see them jumping into projects, whether it was painting, siding, building walls, nail gunning, you name it, we did it. For example, seeing Paul Cruz from Hollywood Hills, painting a wall with Jenna Christensen from Torrance, or Sean Dinneen from Hermosa Beach, siding a wall with Chris Ghetto from Marina Del Rey, that was truly incredible. We’re excited to see these relationships evolve!

IMG_5280At lunch we were joined by Angie, she received a home through Habitat for Humanity last year and shared her insight with us. As a single mother of five children, Angie struggled to pay rent on a 900 sq ft home that had mold, and was located in an extremely dangerous neighborhood. Now, with help from Habitat from Humanity, she’s lives in a 1,400 sq ft home, her children have their own rooms, and she’s seen such a difference in their confidence, grades, and overall quality of life. With the help of our members, we hope to be able to help more families like Angie’s in the Los Angeles area and throughout the country.

As the day came to a close, the final nails were hammered into walls, and we all signed a wall that would live on in the interior of the home. The home is scheduled to be completed in November, and we hope to come back and meet the family when they move in.
