Chad Roberts Nicaragua Experience

Chad Roberts traveled to Nicaragua with Giveback Homes this December to help build a home for Elba. Here's what he thought of the trip...

What an amazing, fulfilling experience!  I wasn’t sure what to expect, but our guides at Giveback Homes and Habitat for Humanity, Nicaragua made sure that we were productive, safe, happy, and well informed.

The first thing I noticed was how happy and helpful everyone we met in Nicaragua were.  The streets and sidewalks were always buzzing with excitement and activity.  Theirs is a very social culture uninhibited by our (anti) social media / smartphone addiction.

What I wasn’t prepared for was the condition of their housing.  Whole sections of major cities are built with things we throw away. We saw many homes were that were built with scrap wood and corrugated sheet metal. Over 70% of Nicaraguan homes are missing key functions like running water, toilets, or finished flooring.

So building homes is not enough. Habitat for Humanity and Giveback Homes work to educate their recipients about health and safety, sanitation, construction methods, and personal finance.

This experience changed me.  It changed the way I see the world and my place in it.  My wife and I want to do this trip every year and find other ways to help our local community. In our business as Realtors, we love making a difference in people’s lives by helping them buy and sell homes.  This trip felt like the ultimate extension of that joy and we are honored to have contributed.
